I believe respecting the spark of God in each person you encounter is the key to peaceful connections

The International Coach Federation (ICF), which is the largest and most influential regulatory organization for coaches, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”* Coaching is a profession that makes a difference in the life of every client, and even in the lives of those that client touches. It is a very fulfilling career for people who enjoy working with others and who want to make the world a better place.

If you are interested in coaching as a career, there are many things to consider before you start. As with any career, it is important to approach it as informed as possible, so that you can make the right choice. Read on to learn more about what it takes to be a coach, and some ways to take that first step.

  • The cost of training
  • The cost of running a business
  • The effort and knowledge to market your services
  • The time involved with running a business
  • Your current skills and knowledge (to help hone in on your target market)
  • Your goals as a coach (i.e., training, credentialing, community involvement, etc.)

Coaching is a relatively new profession, and is highly self-regulated. There are many people who call themselves coaches, who are not aware of exactly what a coach is. Conversely, there are many “Coach Training” facilities that promise a fabulous career for very little capital outlay. Beware of both of these.

If you are truly serious about becoming a coach, you should plan to be trained by a program accredited by the ICF. There are two types of accreditation:

ACTP: Accredited Coach Training Program

  • Minimum of 125 hours coach-specific training
  • Training on all ICF Core Competencies & ICF Code of Ethics
  • Certification when training is complete
  • Graduate eligibility for ACC or PCC (depending on coaching hours & number of clients)
  • Cost: $10,000 - $15,000

ACSTH: Approved Coach Specific Training Hours

  • Minimum of 60 hours of coach specific training
  • Training on some ICF Core Competencies & ICF Code of Ethics
  • Portfolio Application which includes an exam used for credentialing
  • Cost: less than $7,000

The ACTP is the most desirable route in that the concentration is on the ICF Core Competencies, which supports ethical and effective coaching, and also that it is easier to obtain a credential from ICF. Most ACTPs offer financing, and even programs that offer modularized training, allowing you to start coaching early to start bringing in income.

Going the route of the ACSTH, or even taking a module at a time from an ACTP will allow you to spend less up front to start coaching. However, realize that as your profession matures, you will continue to develop your skills by taking classes, going to seminars and retreats, etc., which will cost additional funds. It’s easy to get addicted to learning because it supports your career growth (and it’s so much fun!)

If you are new to coaching, you need to gain a full understanding of what it means to be a coach, and how to give your clients the best results through coaching. If you have coached for any length of time, you understand the fulfillment that comes with seeing the results your clients get from the coaching relationship. As a professional, it’s up to you to continue your growth, learning and practice to ensure you are giving your clients the best service you can.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) developed the ICF Coaching Competencies to support coaches in doing just that. And they based their credentialing system on those competencies in order to assure clients are protected and coaches continue to develop their skills and abilities.

Real Results bases all our training and mentoring on the ICF Coaching Competencies, helping you to be the best coach you can be!

Real Results Training is affiliated with Success Unlimited Network© (SUN). SUN offers an ICF Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) that bases its training on the PCC Level of ICF Coaching Competencies.
